ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Captain Robert ‘Cal’ Callahan

  • LinkedIn

Captain Robert ‘Cal’ Callahan has dedicated his life to the sea, boasting a remarkable 52-year career that began in 1969 when he joined the Navy as a clearance diver. After his Navy service, he returned to his hometown in the Whitsundays, where he opened a dive shop and captained various vessels, including luxury yachts, barges, and passenger ships.

Cal continued to advance his maritime skills, earning his Ship Master’s Class 1 qualification from the Maritime College in Launceston in 1995. In 1998, he joined the Cairns Marine Pilot Service, where he became manager in 2002. His career then led him to Queensland Bulk Ports in Hay Point in 2009, where he worked until his retirement in 2021 after a distinguished 23 years as a marine pilot.

Beyond his expertise in piloting ships, Cal has extensive experience as an educator and trainer. While managing the Cairns Marine Pilot Service, he developed a safety management training program for commercial ships and pilots, transforming Weipa from a high-risk to a low-risk port. At Hay Point, he implemented a competency-based training manual to assess and train new pilots - both programs are still in use today.

Now retired from active marine piloting, Cal continues to impart his vast knowledge at the Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre and as the author and publisher of the "essential boating guide" the Small Vessels Manual. Nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals.

TESTIMONIALS

“I remember his words of advice to me when I first got licensed: ‘The difference between you and me is that I have enough tools in my kit to get me out of trouble. So, build your toolkit.’ Cal has undoubtedly left his mark on the industry through his vast experience and profound knowledge, especially in my career as a pilot.”
